Wall Tiles

Wall tiles are specifically manufactured for vertical surfaces. They are generally thinner and lighter than floor tiles, which makes them easier to adhere to walls and reduces the risk of slippage during installation. Wall tiles do not need to meet floor load-bearing or slip resistance requirements, so they can have smooth, polished, or decorative glazed surfaces that would be impractical on a floor. Never install a wall-only rated tile on a floor - the tile may crack under foot traffic.

Glazed ceramic and porcelain are the most popular bathroom wall tile choices due to their water resistance, easy maintenance, and vast range of colors and sizes. Subway tile in 3×6 or 4×12 formats is a classic wall tile choice for bathrooms. Large format porcelain (12×24 and above) creates a sleek, modern look with minimal grout lines. Glass tile adds a reflective, spa-like quality to shower and bath surrounds. The right choice depends on the style you're creating and your maintenance preference.

There is no single right answer - it depends on your style goals and budget. Common approaches include tiling to the full height of the shower or bath surround (typically 72"-84"), tiling a half wall (36"-48") with paint above, or tiling floor to ceiling for a fully tiled room. Full floor-to-ceiling tile is the most practical for wet areas and creates the most cohesive, high-end look. A half-tiled wall with a contrasting paint color above is a cost-effective option for powder rooms and lower-traffic areas.

Wall tile installation is one of the more accessible DIY tile projects, particularly for flat, straightforward walls like a bathroom vanity backsplash or a kitchen backsplash. The key skills are mixing thinset correctly, applying it evenly with a notched trowel, maintaining consistent spacing with tile spacers, and grouting cleanly. Shower wall tile requires waterproofing the substrate first, which adds complexity. For large areas or shower enclosures, professional installation is recommended to ensure the waterproofing is done correctly.

Smaller tiles (3×6 subway, 4×4 square) are traditional wall tile formats that remain very popular, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens. Medium format tiles (12×24) are increasingly popular on bathroom walls for a cleaner, more contemporary look. Large format tiles (24×48 and above) create a stunning, hotel-quality effect on shower walls and feature walls but require a very solid substrate and appropriate non-sag thinset. In general, scale your tile choice to the size of the room - very large tiles in a small powder room can feel overwhelming.
