Why Get Your Shower Tile Right the First Time

The shower is the most technically demanding tile installation in any home. It needs to be fully waterproof, slip resistant underfoot, easy to clean, and visually cohesive — all at once. Done right, a tiled shower is one of the most durable and beautiful features in any bathroom. Done wrong, it leaks. Our shower tile collection is curated specifically for wet area performance, with every product meeting the waterproofing, slip resistance, and water absorption standards that shower installations demand.

Choosing the right shower floor tile:

  • Slip resistance — R10 minimum for shower floors; more grout joints mean better grip, which is why small format mosaic and 4×4 tile are the preferred shower floor choice
  • Mosaic tile — 1×1, 2×2, and penny round formats conform naturally to the shower floor slope and provide maximum grip
  • Water absorption — fully vitrified porcelain (≤0.5%) is the gold standard for shower floors; never use ceramic rated above 3% absorption in a wet shower
  • Grout — use epoxy grout or sealed cement grout for shower floors; caulk all internal corners with silicone rather than grout to prevent cracking

Shower Wall Tile

Shower walls cover more surface area than any other surface in the bathroom — which makes them the biggest single design decision in the space. The right shower wall tile transforms an enclosed, functional area into something that feels intentional and considered. Our shower wall tile collection covers every style from minimal large format porcelain to decorative mosaic feature walls, all in fully vitrified, waterproof materials suited to constant wet area exposure.

Best shower wall tile by style:

  • Large format porcelain — 12×24 or 24×48 on shower walls eliminates visual clutter, minimizes grout lines, and creates a seamless, hotel-quality finish that is also the easiest surface to keep clean
  • Subway tile — a timeless choice for shower walls in ceramic or porcelain; a classic 3×6 in white with grey grout is one of the most enduringly popular shower tile combinations
  • Mosaic tile — used as a full shower wall covering or as a feature accent in a niche or behind a rain shower head; glass mosaic adds light reflection and depth to enclosed spaces
  • Natural stone — marble and travertine on shower walls deliver a luxury spa aesthetic; requires proper sealing and a honed rather than polished finish for safety

Important: shower walls must be waterproofed before tiling — always use a cement board substrate or liquid-applied waterproofing membrane, never standard drywall. All internal corners should be finished with silicone caulk rather than grout to accommodate natural movement and prevent cracking.

FAQ

What type of tile is best for a shower?

Fully vitrified porcelain tile with a water absorption rate of 0.5% or less is the gold standard for shower tile. It is completely impervious to moisture, resistant to mold and mildew, and available in every size, finish, and style. For shower floors, choose a smaller format tile (mosaic or 4×4 and below) with a slip resistance rating of R10 or higher - more grout joints provide better grip on a wet surface. For shower walls, larger format porcelain (12×24 and up) creates a seamless, low-maintenance look.

Do I need to waterproof before installing shower tile?

Yes - waterproofing is the most critical step in any shower tile installation. Never tile directly onto standard drywall in a shower. Use a cement board substrate, a foam shower board, or a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane on the walls and floor before any tile goes in. Waterproofing must extend at least 6 inches beyond the shower perimeter. All corners and seams must be reinforced with waterproofing tape. Skipping or cutting corners on waterproofing is the most common cause of shower leaks and tile failures

How do I choose grout for a shower?

For shower tile joints, epoxy grout is the most durable and mold-resistant option - it is non-porous, stain-resistant, and does not require sealing. Standard cement-based grout is also commonly used and works well when properly sealed. Use unsanded grout for joints 1/8" or smaller and sanded grout for wider joints. All internal corners in the shower (where walls meet each other and where walls meet the floor) should be filled with color-matched silicone caulk rather than grout, as grout will crack with the slight movement that naturally occurs in these areas.

What tile size should I use for a shower floor?

Smaller tiles are better for shower floors for two reasons: they provide more grout joints which improve slip resistance, and they can conform more easily to the slight slope required for water drainage. The most popular shower floor tile sizes are 1×1 mosaic, 2×2 mosaic, and 4×4 square. Penny round and hexagon mosaics are also popular choices. Avoid large format tiles on shower floors - they are difficult to slope correctly and offer little grip when wet.

Can I use the same tile on shower walls and floors?

You can use the same tile style across walls and floor for a cohesive look, but the floor tile must be specifically rated for floor use with adequate slip resistance. Many designers use a coordinating but different tile on the shower floor - for example, a 12×24 porcelain on the walls with a matching 2×2 mosaic on the floor. This approach is both practical (better grip on the floor) and visually intentional. Check each product's specifications to confirm whether it is rated for floor, wall, or both.
