FAQ

What is glue down vinyl flooring?

Glue down vinyl flooring is luxury vinyl plank or tile that is permanently adhered to the subfloor using a pressure-sensitive or hard-set adhesive. Unlike click lock floating floors, glue down vinyl is bonded directly to the substrate, making it more stable, less prone to movement, and better suited for commercial environments and large open areas where a floating floor might shift or flex. It is also the preferred method in below-grade applications and areas with significant temperature fluctuation.

Is glue down vinyl harder to install than click lock?

Yes - glue down installation requires more preparation and skill than click lock. The subfloor must be extremely clean, flat, and dry before any adhesive is applied, as any imperfection will telegraph through the flexible vinyl. The adhesive must be spread evenly with the correct trowel and allowed to flash (partially dry) to the correct open time before the vinyl is placed. That said, for experienced DIYers or professional installers, glue down provides a superior long-term result in high-traffic and commercial applications.

Can glue down vinyl be removed after installation?

Glue down vinyl can be removed, but it is significantly more labor-intensive than removing click lock flooring. Depending on the adhesive type used and the age of the installation, removal typically requires floor scrapers, heat guns to soften the adhesive, and adhesive remover chemicals. The subfloor may require additional preparation after removal before new flooring can be installed. This permanence is a trade-off for the superior stability glue down provides.

What subfloor is best for glue down vinyl?

Concrete is the ideal substrate for glue down luxury vinyl. It must be clean, dry (moisture content within the adhesive manufacturer's specifications - typically below 3 lbs per 1000 sq ft per 24 hours), flat (within 3/16" per 10 feet), and free of any curing compounds, sealers, or adhesive residue from previous flooring. Plywood subfloors are also compatible but must be smooth, fully fastened, and free of squeaks. All subfloor preparation must be completed before adhesive application.

What adhesive should I use for glue down vinyl?

Always use the adhesive recommended by your specific vinyl flooring manufacturer. Most glue down LVP uses a pressure-sensitive, acrylic-based flooring adhesive that remains slightly flexible after curing to accommodate the slight movement of vinyl with temperature changes. Using the wrong adhesive can void the product warranty and lead to adhesion failures. Follow the manufacturer's trowel notch size specification exactly - applying too much or too little adhesive is the most common installation error.
