Can commercial vinyl flooring be used in residential spaces?

Yes - commercial grade LVP can absolutely be used in residential applications, and it is a popular choice for homeowners who want the absolute highest durability, particularly in households with heavy use, large dogs, or frequent entertaining. The trade-off is that commercial LVP is often thicker and heavier, may have fewer decorative options than residential lines, and is typically glue-down installation which is less DIY-friendly than click lock.

What wear layer is required for commercial flooring?

For light commercial use such as private offices and small retail, a 20 mil wear layer is typically the minimum. For medium commercial such as restaurants, gyms, and retail stores, 28 mil is recommended. For heavy commercial environments including hospitals, schools, and high-traffic retail, 40 mil and above is standard. Always check that the product you select carries the appropriate commercial warranty for your application - using a residential product in a commercial space will void the warranty.

Is commercial vinyl flooring waterproof?

Yes - commercial LVP is 100% waterproof throughout the plank construction, making it suitable for commercial kitchens, healthcare facilities, and any commercial environment where spills, cleaning chemicals, and wet mopping are routine. For full waterproofing in commercial applications, glue-down installation creates a continuous, sealed floor surface without the movement joints that can occur with click lock floating floors. Perimeter sealant is also recommended in wet commercial environments.

How do I maintain commercial vinyl flooring?

Commercial vinyl flooring is designed for institutional maintenance routines. Daily dust mopping or vacuuming removes abrasive grit. Wet mopping with a commercial pH-neutral floor cleaner handles routine soiling. For commercial environments with heavy soiling, a low-speed floor scrubber with a soft brush or pad is appropriate. Avoid high-speed burnishers, abrasive scrub pads, and solvent-based cleaners. Many commercial LVP products are designed to be maintained without wax or floor finish, which simplifies ongoing maintenance significantly.
