Choosing the Right Tile for Every Part of Your Bathroom

Not all bathroom tile is interchangeable — the right choice depends on where in the bathroom you're tiling and what performance you need from the surface.

  • Bathroom floor tile — Look for fully vitrified porcelain with a slip resistance rating of R9 or R10 for wet areas. Larger formats like 24×24 reduce grout lines and make cleaning easier. Matte and textured finishes provide better grip than polished surfaces
  • Bathroom wall tile — Wall tiles don't carry floor loads so they can be thinner and lighter. Subway tile, large format porcelain, and decorative ceramic all work beautifully on bathroom walls
  • Shower tile — Shower walls and floors need fully waterproof, low-absorption tile. Pair a larger format tile on shower walls with a mosaic on the shower floor for slip resistance and drainage
  • Bathroom backsplash — Behind vanities and above bathtubs, glass tile and decorative ceramic create elegant focal points with minimal upkeep

Whether you're renovating a master ensuite, a family bathroom, or a compact powder room, our collection covers every surface, style, and budget. FAQ

What type of tile is best for bathroom floors?

Porcelain is the most popular choice for bathroom floors because of its low water absorption, durability, and versatility. Look for floor tiles with a slip resistance rating of R9 for domestic wet areas or R10 for walk-in showers. Textured or matte finishes provide better grip than polished surfaces. Natural stone is also beautiful but requires sealing to protect against moisture and staining.

What is a good tile size for a small bathroom?

Large format tiles often work better in small bathrooms than small tiles. A 24×24 or 12×24 tile with minimal grout lines creates fewer visual interruptions and makes the room feel more spacious. If you prefer smaller tiles, a classic 3×6 subway tile with bright white grout can also open up a compact space. Avoid busy patterns in very small bathrooms as they can make the space feel cluttered.

Do I need different tiles for the floor and walls in a bathroom?

Yes, generally. Floor tiles must be rated for floor use and meet slip resistance requirements. Wall tiles don't carry the same structural load so they can be thinner and lighter, which also makes installation on vertical surfaces easier. Many of our bathroom collections include coordinating floor and wall options for a cohesive look.

How do I tile a shower properly?

Shower walls and floors need to be waterproofed before tiling - use a waterproof membrane or cement board substrate, never standard drywall. Use fully vitrified porcelain or ceramic tile with a water absorption rate below 0.5%, set with a polymer-modified thinset appropriate for wet areas. Use non-sanded or epoxy grout in the joints, and caulk all internal corners with silicone rather than grout.

How much tile do I need for my bathroom?

Measure the total square footage of each surface you plan to tile (length × width for each wall and floor area). Add 10% overage for a standard rectangular bathroom and up to 15% for rooms with many cuts, angles, or a diagonal layout.
