FAQ

What types of natural stone tile do you carry?

Our natural stone collection includes marble, travertine, slate, and limestone tile in a range of sizes and finishes. Each stone type has its own unique character - marble offers dramatic veining and a polished, luxurious look; travertine has a warm, earthy texture with natural pitting that gives it an Old World appeal; slate brings a rugged, layered texture ideal for rustic and industrial spaces; and limestone offers a refined, understated elegance in warm neutral tones.

Does natural stone tile need to be sealed?

Yes - all natural stone tile should be sealed before grouting and regularly maintained with a penetrating stone sealer. Unlike porcelain and ceramic, natural stone is porous and will absorb liquids, oils, and cleaning chemicals if left unsealed. Sealing frequency depends on the stone type and the application - high-traffic floors and kitchen surfaces may need resealing annually, while wall tile in a low-traffic area may only need sealing every 2-3 years. Always use a sealer specifically formulated for natural stone.

Can natural stone tile be used in a bathroom or shower?

Yes, with the right preparation. Marble, travertine, and slate are all used in bathrooms and showers worldwide. The key requirements are a waterproof substrate, a high-quality polymer-modified thinset, and thorough sealing of both the stone and grout before use. In wet shower environments, choose a honed or textured finish rather than polished, as polished stone can be slippery when wet. Reapply stone sealer at least once a year in shower environments.

Is marble tile difficult to maintain?

Marble requires more care than porcelain or ceramic but is very manageable with the right routine. The biggest risks are acid etching - caused by vinegar, citrus, and many common household cleaners - and staining from oils and liquids soaking into the stone. Use only pH-neutral cleaners formulated for natural stone. Blot spills immediately rather than wiping, which can spread the liquid. Keep stone sealed and avoid placing acidic foods or drinks directly on marble surfaces. With proper care, marble tile maintains its beauty for generations.

What finish should I choose for natural stone tile?

The most common finishes are polished, honed, and brushed. Polished stone has a mirror-like reflective surface that highlights veining and color - ideal for walls, feature areas, and formal spaces. Honed stone has a matte, smooth surface with less slip risk - the preferred choice for bathroom floors and shower walls. Brushed or tumbled finishes have a more textured, aged appearance suited to rustic and transitional interiors. Note that polished finishes show scratches and etching more readily than honed or brushed.
