FAQ

What is click lock vinyl flooring?

Click lock vinyl flooring - also called floating vinyl or click LVP - is a type of luxury vinyl plank where individual planks connect to each other using an interlocking tongue-and-groove or click joint system. The floor floats above the subfloor rather than being glued or nailed down, with the planks holding each other in place through the click connection. This makes it the most DIY-friendly vinyl flooring installation method, requiring no adhesive and no specialized tools beyond a tapping block and pull bar.

Can click lock vinyl be installed over existing flooring?

Yes - click lock LVP can be installed over most existing hard floor surfaces including tile, hardwood, and laminate, as long as the surface is flat (within 3/16" per 10 feet), clean, dry, and structurally sound. It cannot be installed over carpet or soft floor coverings. Check door clearances before installation - adding a floating floor raises the floor height by the thickness of the plank, typically 5-8mm, which can affect door swing.

Does click lock vinyl need underlayment?

Many click lock LVP products come with an attached underlayment pre-installed on the back of the plank. If your product does not include attached underlayment, a thin foam or cork underlayment is recommended to improve comfort underfoot, reduce sound transmission, and compensate for very minor subfloor imperfections. Do not use a thick underlayment (over 3mm) as this can cause the click joints to flex excessively and fail over time.

Can click lock vinyl be installed in bathrooms?

Yes - 100% waterproof click lock LVP is suitable for bathrooms and other wet areas. The click joint itself is water-resistant, but for full bathroom waterproofing, seal the perimeter of the floor where it meets the wall with a bead of silicone caulk. This prevents water from getting under the floor at the edges. Never install click lock vinyl in areas with standing water or where water may sit for extended periods, such as directly in a shower.

How do I fix a damaged click lock vinyl plank?

One of the advantages of click lock vinyl is that individual planks can be replaced without removing the entire floor. For planks in the middle of a room, the floor must be partially disassembled back to the damaged plank by clicking rows apart - start from the wall nearest to the damaged plank. For edge planks, removal is simpler. Always keep a few extra planks from the original installation for future repairs, as dye lots can vary between production runs.
