FAQ

What is ceramic tile made from?

Ceramic tile is made from natural clay mixed with water and other minerals, shaped into tiles, and fired in a kiln at high temperatures. The firing process hardens the clay and, for glazed ceramic, fuses a protective glass-like coating onto the surface. The result is a durable, easy-to-clean tile that has been used in homes for thousands of years.

Where can ceramic tile be used?

Ceramic tile is suitable for walls, floors, backsplashes, and countertops in dry to moderately wet areas. It performs excellently in kitchens, living rooms, hallways, and bathroom walls. For bathroom floors and shower areas, look for floor-rated ceramic with a slip resistance rating of at least R9. Ceramic is generally not recommended for outdoor use in freeze-thaw climates, as it has a higher water absorption rate than porcelain and can crack in freezing temperatures.

What is the difference between glazed and unglazed ceramic tile?

Glazed ceramic tile has a liquid glass coating applied to the surface before the final firing. This glaze creates a non-porous, stain-resistant surface in a wide variety of colors and finishes. Unglazed ceramic has no surface coating, giving it a more natural, matte appearance and a slightly higher grip - it is often used for rustic or artisan-style floors. Unglazed ceramic is more porous and requires sealing to protect against staining.

Is ceramic tile good for a kitchen backsplash?

Yes - ceramic is one of the most popular and practical kitchen backsplash materials. It is easy to clean, heat-resistant, available in an enormous range of colors and patterns, and very cost-effective. Hand-glazed ceramic tiles with slight color variation and texture are particularly popular for bringing warmth and character to kitchen walls. The slightly softer composition of ceramic also makes it easier to cut than porcelain, which is an advantage for DIY backsplash installations.

How do I clean ceramic tile?

Glazed ceramic tile is very easy to clean. Regular sweeping or vacuuming removes grit, and a damp mop with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner is all that is needed for routine maintenance. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on the glazed surface. Grout lines are more porous and will need periodic sealing to prevent staining. For stubborn grout stains, an oxygen bleach grout cleaner applied with a soft brush is effective.
